Permit-License Requirememts
HERE ARE THE STEPS TO GET YOUR PERMIT
3 Easy Steps To Get Your Permit
You must be at least 15 and a half years old.
You must complete a Driver Education Program (In-class or Online) and obtain a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education (OL237 or DL 400B) or Certificate of Completion of Non-Classroom Driver Education (DL 400C).
You will need to enroll in a 6-hour Driver Training program either before or after going to the DMV. Do not drive until you have had your first lesson with a driving instructor. Your permit is not valid until you take your first driver training lesson and the licensed driving instructor signs your permit. If you get pulled over for a traffic stop or get into a collision and your permit has not been signed by a licensed driving instructor, you may have your permit taken away and you will not be able to get your license until you turn 18 years old.
Note: You are not required to schedule an appointment with the DMV to get your permit. However, if you choose to make an appointment, you can call: 1-800-777-0133 or go to the following link to schedule an appointment on the DMV website:
Don't forget to print your confirmation number!
NOTE: If you are unable to get your Permit, call our office immediately to request an extension to your contract expiration date.
- DMV Application for your permit and Driver’s License (DL 44). If both parents or guardians have custody, then both parents will have to sign it. If not, only the parent/guardian who has custody will have to sign it.
- Certificate of Completion of Driver’s Education (OL237 or DL 400B) or Certificate of Completion of Non-Classroom Driver’s Education (DL 400C)
- Your birth certificate or passport (original or certified copy).
- You must pay the DMV a $31.00 Fee which covers both the Permit and Drive test. You must then pass the written exam (46 questions in which you can miss a maximum of 8 questions and still pass). Your Permit is good for 1 year from the application date, not from when you get it.
NOTE: The Provisional Permit IS NOT valid for you to use until you take your first driving lesson with a licensed instructor.
- Be at least 16 years old to take the DMV drive test.
- Must complete 6 hours of Driver Training with a licensed driving instructor and receive a gold certificate of completion (OL 238).
- Complete 50 hours (10 hours must be done at night) of driving. Your parent/guardian will have to sign your permit.
- Six months after the 1st day of receiving your permit, you are eligible to take your drive test.
